Kyudo, an ancient form of Zen Archery, is moving meditation. The practice of Kyudo is deceptively simple. Students will receive instruction in the basic form, shichido, or seven coordinations, during this weekend intensive.
Working with the precision of the form, a natural process gradually unfolds through which the practitioner has the opportunity to see the mind more clearly. The target becomes a mirror which reflects the qualities of heart and mind at the moment of the arrow’s release. This distinguishes Kyudo from archery, where simply hitting the target is the goal. Kyudo is meditation, and as such, is a true contemplative art.
This weekend is open to all ages and backgrounds. No experience is necessary, and strength is not an issue.
Onyumishi Kanjuro Shibata is a 20th generation master bowmaker and archer and 3rd generation Bowmaker to the Emperor of Japan. In 1980, at the invitation of Trungpa Rinpoche, Kanjuro Shibata XX came to the United States from Japan to teach Kyudo to western meditation students. His bold heart and fierce compassion exemplify the archetype of the peaceful warrior from the Shambhala tradition.
