Shambhala Arts Festival Call for Entry

SMCLA joyfully announces its 4th annual Shambhala Arts Festival – a manifestation and community celebration of Shambhala Art/Dharma Art principles based on the teachings of the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. The Festival will be held on Saturday June 13 and Sunday June 14, 2009 at the Shambhala Meditation Center of Los Angeles in Eagle Rock.

Procedure for Entry

Application deadline: May 15, 2009.

Any art form based on Shambhala Art/Dharma Art principles can be submitted for entry. Please send an email to smcla.artfest@gmail.com by May 10, 2009 that includes the following:

1. Description of your offering, indicating which Buddha family, element or wisdom energy your artwork most represents. This year, art will be grouped by Buddha family for display. (See below for a brief description of Buddha families, elements, or wisdom energies and where you can read more about these principles.)
2. Your artist’s statement for the catalog, 150 words or less.
3. A jpeg photo of your work, or include text of your poem or other literary piece.
4. Your full name, phone number and email address.
5. Please answer the following questions in your email:
a. What discipline and medium is your art?
b. How does your work relate to the principles of Shambhala Art?
c. What are your requirements? (Include dimensions for 2-dimensional work, floor space for sculpture and whether you will need a stand, floor dimensions for movement or performance, projector, cd player or other audio visual equipment.)
d. If your offering is a performance or presentation, how much time do you need?
e. What is your relationship to the Shambhala Center?
f. Are you a Shambhala Art graduate?

Karma Wind Green Activity: manifests as a light, refreshing breeze or as a destructive hurricane or tornado
Buddha Space White Spaciousness: vast, boundless and wakeful, awareness without bias, provides space for all other energies to manifest.

Call for Volunteers
We are also looking for volunteers to work on Buddha Family teams to create installations that will be the central piece of each family/element/wisdom energy. If you are interested in participating in this way, please send an email to: smcla.artfest@gmail.com indicating which family you would like to work on. Dimensions of these installations will be no larger than 3’ x 3’ but can be in any visual art form.

Important Details and Dates

Application deadline, including above requirements: Sunday, May 10, 2009.

You will be notified of acceptance of your artwork by May 24th. Your artwork may also be displayed in a Buddha family other than the one you indicated.

Meeting of participants and other volunteers on Sunday, May 31st at 12:30 pm (after nyinthun – come sit a bit). Details of the art festival will be discussed and small jobs will be assigned. Flyers will also be available for distribution.

Artwork drop off at Shambhala Center: Friday, June 12th between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm.

Artwork pickup from the Shambhala Center: Sunday, June 13th between the hours of 3 pm and 6 pm.

All art that is meant for hanging must be framed and ready to hang.

Unless space and time permit otherwise, one artwork per artist only will be shown.

If you indicate that your artwork is for sale, 100% of the sale price of any artwork will be donated to the Shambhala Center.
